Abstract

Caspar Rhain, 17, was a Catholic still living at home with his parents. Six months before he was arrested for the robbery mentioned here, he and his brother, Hanns Georg, were convicted of stealing and were sentenced to 12 lashes with a karbatsch and manual labor. After his recent arrest, Rhain confessed that he, along with Johann Michael Schwaiger and two others, planned the robbery of a parsonage. They attacked and beat the parson before tying his hands. They then ransacked the parsonage and stole whatever they could find including money, meal, cooking fat, bread, eggs, and even the parson's habit, coat, and hat. They divided the spoils among themselves. In punishment for this aggravated robbery, and 9 other thefts to which Rhain confessed, he was given the death sentence. Includes a moralistic description of the events in verse.
