Abstract

Concerns the premeditated murder of Maria Anna Nieberlin by Peter Paul Bellmund, by whom she was pregnant and who fathered a child out of wedlock several years before by another woman. Bellmund met a third women whom he was planning to marry at the time Nieberlin discovered she was pregnant. Nieberlin vowed not interfere with the wedding. She said she would keep the child and raise it herself with the stipulation that he would take care of the it if she died. Bellmund feared the truth would come out and ruin his chances to marry the woman of property so he determined to murder Nieberlin by cutting her throat. Her corpse was found with a large wound in the neck caused by a doubled-edged stilletto. Such a knife and a blood-spattered shirt were found at Bellmund's residence. He was found guilty of murder according to the Criminal Code, article 146 and 147, nos. 3 and 4, part 1 and was sentenced to beheading by the sword, to be preceded by a 30 minute display in the pillory.
