Abstract

Describes the early morning murders of a man named Görwitz, his wife, daughter, and ward. A large sum of gold and silver coins were taken from the home by the murderer and was the motive for the crimes. Eight men were taken into custody as suspects. It was believed there were multiple murderers. Eventually, a man named Joseph Burger came under suspicion for suddenly being able to pay off some debts. He fled the city but was pursued and later taken into custody. He not only confessed to the crimes but insisted he had acted alone. He had been a friend and neighbor of the people he murdered. All eight of the innocents held in custody were released and compensated with money and gifts. The murderer received the death sentence. In conclusion, a song appears that is attributed to the 8 falsely imprisoned men who were said to have sung it to themselves to boost their morale.
