Abstract

Describes the early morning murders of Johann George Görwitz, his wife, 26 year-old daughter, and 15 year-old ward, Therese. A large sum of money was taken from the home of the murder victims and was eventually found to be the motive for the crimes. Eight people were taken into custody as suspects and held for 11 months during the criminal investigation. Eventually, it was discovered that the murdered man's best friend and neighbor had commited the crime alone. The true murderer had never come under suspicion until he had an argument with a young man who worked with him. He impuned the young man's character then neighbors heard the young man say that he, at least, had never sunk so low as to kill anyone. The neighbors reported this to the authorities, the young man was interrogated, and his boss was carefully watched. He was found to have recently paid off a large debt and also to have purchased a large amount of wine in another town. He was arrested, described exactly how he killed the victims and insisted he had acted alone. All eight of those held were released and compensated with money and gifts. The murderer remained in prison in chains until a judge handed down the death sentence.
