Abstract

The confession and sentence of Joseph N., 37, a married Catholic man with 3 stepchildren. Being short of money, he asked a man named Mauerpallier where he might find some. The man told him that workmen in the employ of a certain nobleman often carried cash. Joseph was not familiar with the workmen so Mauerpiller agreed to identify them for him. They waited at a place where the workmen passed and Mauerpallier pointed to a young man whom Joseph chased after then followed into a wooded area. Joseph N. attacked him with a stick, knocked him to the ground, and stole the cash which he then shared with Mauerpailler. The victim testified that after he was beaten and robbed, Joseph N. had held a knife to his chest and asked if he intended to report him. The young man said he would not then cried and begged for his life. Joseph left him but not before hitting him twice more with the stick. Joseph N. was sentenced to be broken with the wheel from the top down. Mauerpailler was also executed.
