Abstract

Describes the case of Barbara Gruberin, a single, 22 year-old servant girl, who gave birth to a child out of wedlock. The mother confessed that, despite signs of life, she wrapped her infant daughter in an apron, put her in a sack, then left the sack beneath the bed straw allowing her baby girl to suffocate. Gruberin was found guilty of infanticide according to Article 131 of the criminal code of Emperor Carl V. She was sentenced to beheading with a sword. Includes an Abschieds-Rede (farewell speech) attributed to the condemned woman.
