Abstract

A flyer discussing the death sentence of Johann Seiss, a 71 year-old, Catholic who, at the age of 65, met and began a long-standing affair with a married woman named Thekla Brandl. Thekla met Johann in a town where she was staying with her husband. Seiss told her, as he had before, that they needed to be free of her husband. He asked what route the couple planned to travel the following day and the woman told him. The married couple stopped in a wood to camp for the night. The wife went into a nearby town while Seiss ambushed and beat to death her husband. Seiss took Stephan Brandl's belongings and met the man's widow in a field near a town where they spent the night together, returning in the morning to bury the body. The obtained a forged marriage license stating they were man and wife as well as a death certificate for Stephan Brandl. Later Seiss and his mistress were attempting to run away before he could be prosecuted for stealing. Under interrogation (and probably torture), Seiss confessed, not only to theft, but to the murder of Stephan Brandl. Authorities searched the spot Seiss told them about and found a badly decomposed body. Seiss was convicted of murder and was sentenced to stand in the pillory for 30 minutes before being beheaded by the sword.
