Abstract

Pamphlet on the case of Maria Katharina Steffanin, a single, 15 year-old Catholic orphan born to an unwed woman. When her mother died suddenly, poisoning was suspected because she had not been ill before. In addition, Maria showed no sorrow but had gotten drunk and gone into town, leaving her mother's body in the care of a stranger. Due to lack of evidence, Maria was not charged with any crime relating to her mother's death. Maria then went to live with her godfather, Anton Herb and his son. She decided to poison them in the hopes of inheriting their house. She traveled to a different town to buy arsenic that she added to meal in the kitchen. When Herb and his son came in from the fields for lunch, Maria served them a soup made with the poisoned meal. Herb died the following day but his son, who had not eaten much because he thought the soup had a peculiar taste, managed to survive. Maria was immediately suspected of poisoning Anton Herb. She was interrogated by an inquisition that found her to be unrepentent and callous. She finally confessed to poisoning Herb and was sentenced to beheading with a sword.
