Abstract

Bartholomäus Schmid, commonly called the Bavarian Barthele, was a 60 year-old, Catholic, married man who committed multiple robberies. He was found to be an incorrigible thief and highway robber. According to Article 126 of the criminal code of Holy Roman Emperor Charlesl V, Schmid was convicted of robbery and was sentenced to beheading with a sword. As an example to others, his corpse was to be put on public display on the wheel. Includes a prayer in verse written in the first person.
