Abstract

A 26 year-old Lutheran woman name Anne Christine Hencken is sentenced to die by the wheel for the murder of a 4 year-old child whom she stabbed and beat to death. Henckman's father died when she was 14. Her mother died when she was 17. Thereafter, she worked as a domestic but could not hold on to any job. Later, she was in charity hospitals to recover from illnesses contracted while working in brothels. Finally, she met a workman with whom she lived and by whom she became pregnant twice. A young woman moved into the same living quarters and became involved with the workman resulting in the termination of his relationship with Henckman. The workman passed Henckman on the street and spat in front of her. She was so infuriated by that insult that she determined to murder the 4 year-old who was the offspring of the workman and the other woman. On April 2, 1799, Henckman stabbed and beat the child to death. After the killing, she turned herself in and made a full confession. Henckman's death sentence was carried out on Aug. 19, 1800. Includes a rhymed song about the events.
